Nature & Nurture
Spend the day just enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends at one of Columbia County’s many natural pursuits. Take to the
water at Clarks Hill Lake, the largest man-made Corps of Engineers lake east of the Mississippi River. Picnic, swim, boat, fish, and just
visit with family at Columbia County’s 975-acre Wildwood Park. Need help? Hayes Marine provides on-lake service for your boat…just call
Enjoy a round of golf at one of the three courses in Columbia County – Jones Creek, Bartram Trail, or Gordon Lakes (on Fort Gordon) – or play disc golf at one of the courses at Patriot’s Park or Wildwood Park.
For outdoor education and information, visit the Reed Creek Wetlands Interpretive Center. Walking on the tree-shaded boardwalks on a sunny afternoon is the perfect way to get back to nature.
Spend a weekend away while you’re still “in town” and rent a cottage at Mistletoe State Park.
Small groups with advance reservations can get a look at Heggie’s Rock, a large granite outcropping from the same vein as Stone Mountain.
Take a Petersburg Boat Tour of the Augusta Canal with a visit to the Interpretive Center. You can also bike, hike or walk the canal tow path or rent a canoe or kayak and float down the Canal on your own.
Follow the path of William Bartram, America’s first native born naturalist/artist and the first author in the modern genre of writers who portrayed nature through personal experience as well as scientific observation. For mountain bikers, the Bartram Trail is a fast trail with lots of nice views of the lake. Beginners will appreciate the lack of climbing and smooth tread, and more experienced riders will enjoy flying through the woods at warp speed.
Participate in the annual Best Dam Ride held each April to benefit the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation. The ride includes three different courses to meet every skill level.
Wear The Kids OUT!
Tackle your kids’ energies and your teens’ penchant for boredom with time spent at one of these awesome venues!
Have a family fun day at Adventure Crossing, a mini-amusement park across the interstate from more than 900 hotel rooms. Its banquet facilities also make it the perfect place for your family reunion, special event, or just a “play day”!
See who will gain top honors in a Miniature Golf Family Challenge at the Putt-Putt Family Fun Center.
Families can bounce, slide, jump and have a great time either Monkey Joe’s or Jump City…both available for indoor fun at either of these indoor facilities filled with fun inflatables. Great for a rainy day!

To see life in flight, visit Feathered Friends Bird Rescue/Refuge in Harlem (website www.featheredfriendsforever.org; telephone 706-556-2424) for a colorful day of avian antics.
