BMX Gold Cup highlights

May 2016

Over the next month or so Columbia County will be wide open with events, so if anyone you know says there’s nothing to do, please have them give us a call. We will be happy to point them in the right direction.

By the time some of you read this post, we will have gotten through Benderdinker, the ever-growing, ever-popular paddling and food festival on Betty’s Branch and the Savannah River, April 30. The ASA Archery 3D archery tournament out at Wildwood Park may also be finished as well. Event organizers were expecting around 1,800 participants for this unique event.

These events could not be successful without amazing and hardworking county staff. Columbia County prides itself on quality venues, and we are also proud of the amazing workforce making things happen behind the scenes.

There are a bunch of neat activities taking place in May. Two “must-attend” events are Thunder Over Evans on May 21, in celebration of Armed Forces Day. The other is Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que Music Festival over Memorial Day Weekend. Follow the links in the newsletter for details and event schedules for both events.

And finally, the third annual Wildwood Games presented by Zaxby’s will take place June 4 and 5. This year we are proud to announce that Augusta University and iHeart Media have joined our list of outstanding partners who help make the event happen.

The Wildwood Games will feature six sports disciplines over two days and two venues. On Saturday, June 4, in honor of National Trails Day, the event will feature the USA Cycling Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships, as well as Open Water Swimming, at Wildwood Park. Two new additions to the Games, BMX and skateboarding will occur at Blanchard Woods Park.

The Wildwood Games will end on Sunday with four distances of trail running races - 50K, Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K – and a disc golf tournament at the International Disc Golf Center. Registration is open for competitors, and we are also looking for volunteers to assist managing a smooth running event. For more information, go to WildwoodGames.com

There’s a lot to look forward to over the next couple of months. Of course we still have to get through the end of the school year, just know that once finals are complete and the grades are in, there will be plenty of things to do here in Columbia County!

Wildwood Games 2016 dates announced

Evans, GA (July 15, 2015) - The Columbia County CVB announced today the dates for next year’s USA Cycling Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships and Wildwood Games. The event will return to Wildwood Park the weekend of June 4-5, 2016. In addition to the mountain bike race, the Wildwood Games will once again feature trail running, open water swimming, and disc golf.

A possible new addition to the schedule will be BMX at the new Blanchard Woods Park. “We are in discussions with the Blanchard Woods BMX association about adding bicycle motocross to the schedule. From the beginning, we’ve envisioned expanding the competition outside of Wildwood Park and highlighting other facilities in Columbia County. BMX is the logical next step”, said Randy DuTeau, executive director of the Columbia County CVB.

Event organizers are also planning to expand the “festival” component of the event to draw non-competitors who enjoy the outdoors healthy lifestyle elements of the Wildwood Games. “We are bringing in some new partners for next year who may help us realize our vision of having a true outdoor competition and festival”, said DuTeau. “We can see live music, food, vendors, and non-competition activities for outdoor enthusiasts be added to the event.”

The USA Cycling race and the 1.5 and 3 mile open water swimming races will be held Saturday, June 4. Disc golf and trail running races will take place on Sunday, June 5. The Wildwood Games trail races will once again offer 50K, marathon, half-marathon, and 10K distances. Festival hours and BMX information will be released later in the summer.

Registration for trail running and open water swimming have opened on Active.com. Mountain biking registration will open next spring and disc golf is scheduled to begin this fall. Information on the Wildwood Games can be found at WildwoodGames.com and on Facebook.
